Pim Baxter OBE

Deputy Director and Director of Communications and Development, The National Portrait Gallery

Pim Baxter is Deputy Director at the National Portrait Gallery, where she has headed up the Communications and Development team since 1997. Over these years she has gained extensive knowledge of strategic planning and her role has included fundraising and sponsorship, communications, event and project management, leading a capital project, advocacy, public speaking and personnel relations. She has worked across the arts including in opera, visual arts and theatre. Prior to the National Portrait Gallery she spent eight years with the National Theatre.

Pim has a wide range of mentoring experience - with the City University Cultural Leadership Programme, Arts Marketing Association and Arts & Business. She is on the Board of three arts organisations - the Gate Theatre, Notting Hill, Arts Inform (an organisation which specialises in the development of work-related learning initiatives in the arts) and ALVA (the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions). She is a member of the Women Leaders in Museums group and will take on the role of Co-Chair.

In the early '70s Pim was one of the first people to enrol for an Open University degree when it was opened out to individuals under the age of 21. She studied at the same time as having her family.

Named in March 2010 as one of the Cultural Leadership Programmes 50 Women to Watch within the creative and cultural sector, Pim has a rich career history in the arts.

She previously spent nine years at the National Theatre as marketing manager and within the development department which included her taking on the role of head of individual giving.

In her spare time Pim is a mentor for the Arts Marketing Association and on the boards of the Gate Theatre and Arts Inform.

Pim has also been a mentor for Arts and Business, the City University Cultural Leadership Programme, and the Arts Inform creative partnership programme.

Pim was appointed an OBE in the New Year's honours 2016 for 'services to the Arts'.
